Started in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained running.
